10,000 Daily steps
Walking is the most common form of exercise. After using your pedometer for several days increase the number of steps you take by adding 500 each day for a week. Gradually increase and aim for 10,000 steps or approximately 5 miles daily. To increase your steps:
- Take the stairs instead of elevator.
- Park a few blocks from work and walk in.
- Park in the back of the parking lot.
- Return the cart to the store instead of using cart corals.
- Get up to change the channel.
- Walk around the house while you are over the phone.
- Go for a walk with your spouse, child, friend or dog.
- Start a walking or stroller group in your neighborhood.
- Walk around the sports field during kids’ activities.
