Toddler Safety
Safety is very important for toddlers. They get lots of injuries at this stage. Important means of preventing injuries in toddlers include:
- Use a car seat if required. Your child should sit in the back seat to prevent airbag injuries.
- Supervise your toddler closely while playing outside. Especially if a street, driveway or mower is nearby.
- Never leave your child unattended in the house or car.
- Supervise your toddler closely when your toddler is near any source of water (pool, pond, bathtub).
- Always check bath temperature. Turn hot water heater down to 120F.
- In the kitchen, protect from hot liquids and other hazards – teach what “hot” means.
- Safety-proof your home by getting down on your child’s level. Use socket covers over electrical outlets, use stairs gates, lock windows and store matches in a locked place.
- Place all toxic substances (medications, poisons, cleaners) out of reach and preferably in a locked cabinet, not under the kitchen sink.
- Do not refer to medicine as candy.
- Supervise and select play areas with soft ground cover and safe equipment.
- Avoid small, round pieces of food, such as hot dogs, candy, nuts, popcorn, grapes and uncooked vegetables.
- Do not allow lollipops or similar objects in the mouth when walking or running.
- Select large, sturdy toys without sharp edges nor small parts.
- Store all dangerous tools and equipment in locked cabinet.
- Teach never to go with a stranger.
- Teach name and phone number and to ask for help from appropriate people.
