Preparing Your Child For Entrance Exams
Now a day every course has its entrance exam. Your child can only do that course if he/she clears that exam. It’s also a kind of big stress for them and obviously for you too. But some parents instead of helping their kids to get out of that stress push them more into the stress. Are you one of those parents? If yes then here are some guidelines for you to prepare your child for the entrance exam without any stress.
- Have trust in him: Show your trust in your child. Tell him that you know he will make it through.
- Don’t pressurize him: Don’t pressurize your child for anything as some parents push their child for long study hours. Its not necessary that by studying for long hours is the only key to clear the exam. Some students study for very less time but still tops in the exam.
- Be affectionate but don't make the child uncomfortable with over-attention. A hug in private just works fine.
- Do not set down rules for your child: let the child follow his or her routine while studying. Nevertheless, you can always assist your child in coming up with a routine. For example, if your child says he or she is likely to sit up late, ask whether he or she would need anything. Do not stay up unless your child wants you to.
- Focus on the child's and your own nutrition. Remember not to cook food (like halwas, biryani, etc) that will make your child lethargic. If you do prepare these foods, see that your child eats in moderation
- If needed arrange a tutor for him: Clearing an entrance exam is not like cake walk. It’s a tough job. Some children need some help to clear them. If you can’t be a help, arrange a tutor for him/her. Good point of arranging a tutor is that tutor is well versed with the syllabus and examination system.
- Help them to make a study plan: A study plan will help them to reach their goal. The first step is to figure out how much time and effort must dedicate to studying for the exam by asking the following questions:
- How much material do you need to cover?
- How difficult is the material?
- How much time is available?
- Do you have any other priorities during the study period?
- What is the format of the exam?
- How important is the exam?
- What is your performance target for the exam?
- Study material: There are some organizations which provide complete study material for specific entrance exams. These can be very helpful to the child as they cover every thing in them.
If in case your child is not able to make it. One of the most important facts to reinforce to your child is that the exam is not the end to everything. There are many things the child has to look forward to Don’t be get yourself depress and help your child to get out of it.
What to do if your child slips into depression after the failure.
- Talk to him/her: Talk to your child about how she/he is feeling.
- Build her/his self confidence: May be due the non clearance of the exam your child have lost his confidence. Try to bring it back and maintain his self esteem by praising his other works.
- Use distraction tactics: Take your child for an outing or make him join some drama classes so that he can be his own.
- Make sure your child gets enough exercise: set aside enough chances for your child to run around in the fresh air and balance this with making sure he also gets enough relaxing, regular sleep.
- Encourage physical activity: Encourage your teenager to stay active. Exercise can go a long way toward relieving the symptoms of depression.
